Plot Overview During a lively dinner party debate over whether capital punishment is more or less humane than life imprisonment, an arrogant, wealthy banker wagers two million rubles that a young lawyer cannot spend five years in solitary confinement. Driven by pride and youthful conviction, the lawyer raises the stakes to fifteen years.

The lawyer spends 1870 to 1885 locked in a garden lodge on the banker’s estate under strict rules: no human contact, no leaving, but unlimited access to books, musical instruments, and wine. Over the decade and a half, his mental state shifts dramatically:

• First struggling with loneliness and despair,

• Then intensively devouring hundreds of classics, sciences, languages, philosophy, and religious texts (spending nearly a year on the New Testament alone).

Meanwhile, the banker ruins his own fortune through reckless speculation. Facing bankruptcy if he pays the debt, he decides to murder the prisoner on the eve of his release. However, when he sneaks into the lodge, he finds a letter written by the lawyer. Having gained profound spiritual wisdom, the lawyer declares complete contempt for earthly wealth, knowledge, and mortal life—announcing he will forfeit the fortune by walking out five minutes before his time is up. Weeping with shame, the banker locks the letter in a safe and lets him leave.
