Claude would go around to the other side of the island and we would play shipwrecked mariners signalling to each other with kites.

We had a kite that was big and covered with lovely red paper. We pasted gold tinsel stars all over it and had written our full names on it—Claude Leete and Philippa Leete, Big Half Moon lighthouse.

READING COMPREHENSION (UNSEEN)

3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Mangroves are a group of trees and shrubs that grow along tropical and subtropical coastlines. These salt-tolerant trees are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. In India, the Sundarbans, spanning parts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, host the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world.

The significance of mangroves extends far beyond their immediate environment. Their dense root systems act as natural breakwaters, significantly reducing the impact of storm surges, cyclones, and soil erosion. During severe cyclones like Amphan and Yaas, the Sundarbans acted as a green wall, absorbing the initial shock and shielding densely populated inland regions from catastrophic devastation.

Additionally, mangroves are vital carbon sinks. They sequester carbon dioxide at a rate up to four times greater than mature tropical rainforests, storing it in their biomass and the soil beneath them. They also provide nursery grounds for numerous species of fish, crabs, and shrimp, thereby supporting local fisheries and providing livelihoods to thousands of coastal families.

Despite their critical ecological and economic benefits, mangroves are facing severe threats globally. Rapid coastal development, aquaculture expansion, rising sea levels due to climate change, and pollution have led to significant depletion. Environmentalists emphasize that urgent community-driven restoration projects, strict enforcement of coastal regulations, and climate awareness are imperative to save this fragile ecosystem before it is too late.

A. Choose the correct alternative to complete the following sentences: 1*6=6

(i) Mangrove forests typically thrive in—

(a) desert areas

(b) cold mountainous regions

(c) tropical and subtropical coastlines

(d) deep freshwater rivers

(b) Sundarbans

(c) Congo Basin

(d) Nilgiris

(iii) Mangrove roots protect coastlines by acting as—

(a) natural breakwaters

(b) water reservoirs

(c) wooden barricades

(d) artificial dams

(iv) Cyclones Amphan and Yaas highlighted the mangroves’ role as a—

(a) wind barrier

(b) green wall

(c) wooden roof

(d) water purifier

(v) Mangroves absorb carbon dioxide at a rate faster than—

(a) polar tundra

(b) tropical rainforests

(c) alpine meadows

(d) temperate grasslands

(vi) A major factor contributing to mangrove depletion is—

(a) afforestation

(b) controlled fishing

(c) coastal development
